The band’s story began in 1998, when founder Zoltán Finok was captivated by the legendary jazz radio broadcast on Willis Conover’s Voice of America Jazz Hour. As he listened to the music of Benny Goodman, Count Basie, and Lester Young, something magical happened – he was hooked. Swing wasn’t just a genre anymore; it was a passion, a calling. By the year 2000, with a head full of swing tunes and a heart set on preserving this musical legacy, Zoltán set out to form his own band. He found like-minded musicians who were just as crazy about swing and just as skilled. And so, The Jazz Steps Band was born.
Each member of The Jazz Steps Band brings their own unique love for this music since their youth. The trumpet player, for instance, spent his teenage years listening to Louis Armstrong records on repeat, choosing Satchmo’s solos over math homework. The drummer? Let’s just say the neighbours got used to hearing Gene Krupa’s wild rhythms all day long. While they’ve grown as musicians, tried their hands at other genres, and earned professional qualifications, but never losing their love for early jazz.
What makes The Jazz Steps Band unique?
Their repertoire has evolved into something truly special-featuring rare gems and distinctive interpretations that you won’t hear anywhere else. While they perform swing-era classics with great skill and artistry, their playful, swing-infused takes on other well-known tunes always surprise and entertain audiences. Expect the unexpected at their concerts – one minute you’re swaying to a classic swing tune, and the next you’re laughing out loud at their quirky, jazzed-up take on a familiar favorite.
No matter where they perform, at jazz festivals or clubs, Jazz Steps Band captures the heart of swing jazz and presents it with a fresh, modern touch. Their performances are filled with energy, passion, and plenty of charm. With this band, one thing’s for sure: you’ll never be bored.
